Dolphins over Pats

Miami won the battle of field goals New England 12-9 in overtime. The game was once again marred by questionable officiating. Terrell Buckley was once again the target. The cornerback seems to draw disputable flags when it appears there is only incidental contact. The Dolphins won the game on a 43 yard overtime field goal by Olindo Mare. Mare tied the game on a 25-yard field goal with 49 seconds left in regulation. Dan Marino suffered 3 interceptions. Rookie John Avery had another strong day on kickoffs, returning 5 for 104 yards. Brian Walker got the lone Dolphin interception. Daryl Gardener and Tim Bowens had a breakout game. The duo harassed Bledsoe and stuffed the run all day.

Player Quotes

"We were definitely stumbling on offense," Dan Marino said. "You want to be perfect, and we're not exactly perfect. We're hanging in there. That's what we've got to do. We have a great kicker. Olindo's a clutch guy. We knew if we got into position he would win it for us."

"When I get out there, I just concentrate and try to do the samething whether it's a game winning kick or not," said Olindo Mare, who enjoyed the 4th game winning field goal of his career. "I don't know what I did when the ball went through. It just feels good to celebrate."

"When you get in that situation, there's no better man to have in the huddle," McDuffie said of Marino. "He's done it so many times."

"We haven't beaten New England in a while," said Dolphins middle linebacker Zach Thomas. "They've been on top of this division for a long time. It's good to be back on top and have them chasing us."

"I hesitate to say things would have been different with the experienced guys," said Patriots quarterback Drew Bledsoe. "Those guys had been playmakers for awhile, Terry, Troy and Bris. It does hurt to lose those guys. The real frustrating thing is early in the game we had great field position and weren't able to capitalize," said Bledsoe. "We had an opportunity to put some points on the board and couldn't do it."

Coach Quotes

"Although we only sacked Bledsoe a couple of times, we put him under tremendous pressure and made him throw it away a couple of times," said Dolphins coach Jimmy Johnson."He's (Mare) as cool a kicker as I've ever been around."

"That's a very good defense," New England coach Pete Carroll said. "They were all over the place"
