Dolphins Lose to the Jets

Miami lost to the Jets 20-9 to fall from the ranks of the unbeatens. Dan Marino was harassed all day, getting sacked three times and throwing two interceptions. The Fins were limited to 34 yards rushing and Marino could only throw one touchdown pass. New York was helped out by a pass interference call on rookie Patrick Surtain. Replays clearly showed he never touched the receiver and should have had an interception. But instead of Dolphins' ball, the Jets kept possession and they kicked a field goal. Shane Burton blocked a 44 yard attempt by the Jets. Jason Taylor had 2 sacks, even though he briefly left the game for xrays and came back wearing a cast on his wrist.

Player Quotes

"On first and second downs, they were bringing their safeties up to the line of scrimmage, making it very difficult to run the ball," said Dan Marino. "They just played a lot better than us; we knew what they were going to do, we just did not do our jobs."

"He is a great back and that is why the Jets brought him in," said Dolphins linebacker Zac Thomas about Curtis Martin. "He's been playing well and did a real good job today. We are 3-1 and that is nothing to panic over. We were not going to go undefeated, this is the NFL, everyone loses. You just can't make a habit of it."

"It feels good," said former Dolphin running back, Keith Byars after breaking the record for receptions for running backs. "It is a long time coming and I have a lot of people to thank for that. Actually the quarterback on the other sideline helped me get here and it would have been just as nice if he could have thrown it to me."

"We spoke all week about not letting Dan Marino enjoy the things he likes, and in order to do that we knew we had to stop their running game and put pressure on him to create situations for ourselves," said former Dolphin Bryan Cox.

"There just weren't any receivers open for him, "Phil Simms, the CBS analyst and former Giant quarterback, was saying about Marino. "None really at all. There's really nothing a quarterback can do in games like this where there isn't much running game and no one really to throw to."

Coach Quotes

"We weren't as aggressive as we had been before," Jimmy Johnson lamented. "I don't have the answer as far was why we weren't. There were a lot of things that happened that distracted us. We're not a talented enough team to go on the road and be effective and win unless we do have that sense of urgency and are playing at our best. When you don't play well in this league, you don't win."

"I would not have liked to be 1-3 obviously," noted Jets coach Bill Parcells. "It was kind of a defensive battle out there for a while. I thought our defense played well out there, as well as it has in a long while. We made a couple of plays offensively and defensively."
