Dolphins Beat the Colts
The Dolphins defeated the Colts 24-15 at the RCA Dome. The Miami defense harassed
Colt quarterback Peyton Manning all day. They sacked the rookie 4 times and got 3
interceptions. Terrell Buckley came away with 2 ints, returning one for a touchdown.
Peyton Manning threw for over 300 yards in his NFL debut. Manning managed to get a
late touchdown pass when time ran out in the 4th quarter. Dan Marino threw 1 TD
pass to Oronde Gadsden and relied mostly on a running game. Karim Abdul-Jabbar rushed
for over 100 yards and one touchdown. Jason Taylor, Derrick Rodgers, Trace Armstrong
and Calvin Jackson all got sacks.
"When you play against a guy like Marino, you know your team is going to have to
score," Peyton Manning said. "You feel like every possession you have you need to get
something out of it. I think the entire team and I will learn a lot from this game.
Pretty much the tale is that if you turn the ball over you're not going to win the
game. They had one turnover, we had four; there is your story right there."
"I thought our offensive line, tight ends and fullbacks came off the ball and blocked
very well," said Karim Abdul-Jabbar. "I thought we were very physical on both sides
of the ball today."
"I just had to pick and choose my shots," said Terrell Buckley. "I was bumping
the receiver and staying on him. You evaluate your speed versus the receiver early
in the game and learn how to play him."
"I used my size to go up and grab it," said the 6-2, 218-pound Oronde Gadsden.
"I'm trying to show Dan (Marino)I'm a reliable receiver. Tyrone Poole (5-foot-8
cornerback) was guarding me and I knew my size would be a factor."
"That's the NFL, if you make mistakes, you lose," said Colts' coach, Jim Mora.
