Miami Over Buffalo 13-7

Miami's defense beat down the Bills to win 13-7. They had eight sacks, with Trace Armstrong, Jason Taylor, and Lorenzo Bromell getting two sacks each. Their sack total was one shy of the team record set in 1973. Rookie corner Patrick Surtain intercepted his first NFL pass. The offense didn't get a first down in their first four series. Dan Marino threw for a touchdown to Lamar Thomas and Olindo Mare kicked field goals of 33 and 27 yards, accounting for all of the Dolphins' scoring.

Player Quotes

"It's just a clear out to one side and run a crossing route," said Dan Marino about the touchdown play. "It's a very simple pattern, it worked for a touchdown the first time because they were backing off and I didn't think their man coverage was able to weed through all the people coming down the field."

"Fans love to see touchdowns, so maybe it was a boring game for them," Zach Thomas said. "For us, though, it's awesome. I'm sorry to disappoint them, but I hope it's like that all season."

"He was antsy, you could sense that," said Lorenzo Bromell of Rob Johnson. "If you have a quarterback like that, you know you pretty much have him."

"It's kind of like bloody water when sharks are around," said Rob Johnson, after getting sacked 8 times. "I'm beat up, but I wouldn't feel as bad if we had won."

"We had a good day today, but we've got to keep going," Trace Armstrong said. "We're not ready to talk about the league record which is 72."

"Danny has been very patient when we need him, we can still go to him," O.J. McDuffie said. "But, he knows and we all know that we have to stick with the plan of where we want to go. If we get away from that, we're not going to progress."

Coach Quotes

"Our defense is playing their butts off, and offensively we're really letting them down," Jimmy Johnson said. "It's frustrating. We've got to get better. We are doing the critical things, protecting the passer, running the ball, and for the 2nd week in a row we did not have a turnover. We will start clicking a lot more in the next couple of weeks. Contrary to one article this week, Karim Abdul-Jabbar can run the ball in the second half." joked Johnson. "We had 12 yards rushing at the half, and when everyone in the stadium knew that we were going to run the ball, we ran the ball in the second half."

"We cannot blame one player, and we can't blame the offensive line," said Bills coach Wade Phillips about the eight sacks. "We have to learn to do the right thing in these situations and simulate them in the practice. I felt whoever ran the ball the best in the second half would win the game, and that turned out to be the case. We're immature offensively, we're just not there yet. We have a young quarterback who is learning on the job."
